Ageing graciously with Hyaluronic acid
Benefits of HA
Days go fast, turning to months, months in years.. ageing graciously is not easy and it takes some spirit strength along with will to learn and implement new ways to maintain health. Now, I see several perspectives to it. Understanding what is our goal when it comes to gracious ageing is the beginning point; adding basic skills from chemistry could be beneficial.
In my search for understanding skin ageing, questions about skin hydration is always to pop up first. Especially in places like Australia, where we have a lot of sunny days and hence need to think about how to keep skin safe and well hydrated. Most of these products will include both components to tackle skin metabolic paths. Hyaluronic acid proved to be the most efficient molecules to bind water and keep skin cells in good shape, working as a glycosaminoglycan. It is known that molecules from this class are polar and hence can attract water molecules, keep them for longer and provide high metabolic rate to its cells.
HA can be animal derived and non-animal derived. First type is produced from animals, particularly rooster comb but-better option is second, non animal derived- trough biofermentation of Streptococcus bacteria.
Source of HA is often questionable since most of it comes from animals. Luckily, people now realise the damage caused by sourcing chemicals in this way and more often search for clean products, plant or at least bacterial metabolism derivatives.
When it comes to HA, the newest source is byproduct of bacterial metabolism and can be well collected and later manufactured to several types of products.
Proposed solution could influence skin care routine and later even culture of radical solution such as surgical solutions . In a generation or two we could see benefits of these decisions in graciousness of aging- without changing face expressions and keeping its original shape.
HA lays is extracellular matrix of the skin but is it also present in connective tissue, eyes and synovium. Nature of these tissues require presence of water molecules and this is mainly solved by presence of typical anionic molecule HA. After using it we could see a full volume of the skin cells, along with structural support, hence HA presents maybe the best chemical for any skin product.
“Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers work to counteract ageing by replacing lost volume. In addition to this, hyaluronic acid fillers have also been shown to increase collagen production and affect fibroblast morphology.”(K. Walker, B Basehor, 2023)
In the production process, HA is made with higher density and better resistance for physical and chemical degradation.
“The hyaluronic acid filler contains modified hyaluronic acid particles that are cross-linked, which allows for the production of a more concentrated hyaluronic acid that has greater resistance to chemical and physical degradation.”(K. Walker, B Basehor, 2023)
In such form HA can be used even for specific and complex conditions like osteoarthritis and bring relieve of pain for a certain time, if injected into destructed places. Some of the usages include ophthalmic, submucosal injection, intradermal, subcutaneous injection, and the most popular is topical cream or gel. HA can be applied to wounds, skin ulcers, atopical skin dermatitis, allergies caused skin destructions etc.
Overall story of HA, when non-animal derived, is highly beneficial for our skin. Its usage can be determined depending of the condition but generally, this chemical can be used by almost anybody since it is already part of our skin structure.
