The community in the organism
The community in the organism
Our organism is a very large community made of single cells. Once upon a time, these cells decide to cooperate for a higher purpose- their better living. So cells needed to share responsibilities and so it was- some became responsible for breathing others for digesting food, some cleared the whole system or organized to reproduce and finally there are also cells who controlled all of the others- brain and nerve system.
A story that began with the simple decision spread further so cells needed better communication. To communicate they were sending messengers- sometimes molecules and other times specialized cells of an immune response, etc. Communication between cells is called Cell signaling. They are like ships and lighthouses- navigating their way into the safe port. The trip is not over yet since molecules need to find the entrance and so we have receptors and bonding places on our cells.
Knowledge about the Cell signaling, binding of molecules and further metabolism after the reception is used for a better understanding of our organism and in the development of specific drugs. But still, having this understanding doesn’t silence our amazement with these magnificent decisions made a long time ago, for a higher purpose- to survive and thrive! Can we all learn something from it?
