Permaculture

Permaculture is a way of living, for people who are willing to give up of luxurious life and give their time and efforts for growing their goods. From the perspective of the majority, investing time in growing simple food seems like a poor decision.

After learning more about permaculture, we find out how circular system works. All plants are planted to supplement each other and so as animals, which will be introduced later and by choice, depending on the herbal environment.

The simplest form of permaculture is found in forests, where trees provide climate control so as ponds and other vegetation. Animals represent pollinators, they control the number of pests and growth of the grass, so no additional cutting is necessary. In high altitude forests, it is possible to provide a milder temperature range with the proper vegetation so as better watering when the environment is too dry or susceptible to erosion. Roots can keep water flowing without the erosion of the soil and enough humidity is left for other plants. When chosen for permaculture growing, a piece of land has to be adapted to human needs but only that much so it doesn’t change its primary role. There is a fine line between overusing it or poor decisions when it comes to implementing new species, whether its a plant or animal.

Permaculture started as an idea, for joining three different branches: ecology, agriculture, and architectural environmental design. There are many names connected to this way of living, growing and working, but two of them are considered as inventors-Bill Mollison and David Holmgren. Bill has spread the word and widen perspectives, started new teaching courses, and above all, inspired others. Holmgren has invested a lifetime of efforts and interest in growing and developing this culture, starting from and becoming world-known, the one to consult and rely on when it comes to the practice.

Energy inputs are joined with Principles of Energy Cycling and Energy Efficiency. There we can see people investing their strength in working on the land or implementing new technological ideas like solar panels, to channel energy efficiency and inputs in the right direction. When it comes to Energy Cycling, this small environment is providing the energy for its self and transfer it between different species. For example, fish in the pond will provide nitrate for the plants. The trees will use nitrates for their growth, in return cleaning the water and providing shadow for others. Vegetation and water will milden the climate, while animals control pests so that fruits stay safe and untouched. Everything built in this environment is multifunctional and support each other. Although many preach about different Principles and how to implement all of them, the truth stays simple-follow the rules of nature since this is the ultimate creator.

Jodie Vennitti recommended: “start with a small garden, maybe in a tube or a pot and love it”.

There is a special joy in picking up your vegetables and fruits, especially knowing that it is of top quality since no mineral fertilizers are added to the soil and everything done/added is only natural. Animals living in this area will naturally fertilize the soil and no pesticides are used, neither. Fruits harvested from the permaculture soil are not many and there is higher value in it. We appreciate more everything when it is done with more effort and where more love and time is invested.
